#11 - Unsatidfied with commercial options

Once upon a time I worked at a little known company named Carbon by Desing LLC.  I learned lots of composite skills, now 10 years old, but all the same I’ve decided to make a thing.  Currently the only commercially available intake systems for the Rocket  3 all have reasons to not be used... plenum too small, no air filter provisions for street use, way way too expensive, or just a filter slapped on the throttle bodies.

Knowing that top end power can be increased by using a large plenum, even on an ITB setup, I’ve begun work on my own, custom one off setup.  It’ll be adaptable to either run as an unfiltered maximum flow, functional Ramair setup (real ramair not the filter sold by the company), or, slap a big base diameter K&N on it and use it on the street without giving up the benefits of a plenum.

Currently it’s just the first two layer, wet laid onto a custom plug.  The plug was made using a Pipercross PX-600, a two liter soda bottle, blue painters tape and aluminum foil.  At this point it’s not pretty, but, composites never are at this stage.

To gain the most from the system it needs to be somewhat flexible, enough that the walls of the plenum can resonate sympathetically with the motor.   To enable this I’m using West Systems 105 epoxy resin.  It’s thick, it’s nasty, it sets out like shit, it cures hot, goes on like ass, and generally is terrible stuff, but it’s locally available and it works well enough.  It’s also not really picky about A/B mix accuracy, close enough gets it done.

Lots of sanding in my future....
